I had to wake up fairly early this weekend and open the shop cos Neil and Yo are away. I walked down stairs to open the shop and was greeted by Dave (Australian guy that dived with us in Tulagi) and Eric an Australian general surgeon doing volunteer work in Number 9 –I take my hat off to the guy. Number 9 is a hospital used in WWII and is still running today. I find it fascinating that this island (Guadalcanal) has so much history that it blows your mind!
We packed the truck and head off to a dive site where a B-17 American aircraft bomber had been shot down by the Japs just off Bonegi beach. It had a crew of 15 and only the pilot and co-pilot had survived the crash but once they made it to shore they both were shot and killed by Jap troops. Once we had rigged up and made it into the calm sea a figure stared to become clear. We approached the right wing of the aircraft and after doing a little searching the whole plane was still intact except for the tail end. This was the first wreck i had come across that didn’t have any kind of coral growing on it. The area was fulled with lots of fish though, different shapes and sizes! I got a chance to sit in the seats of the two “survivers”. It was quite an experience.
We made our way back to the beach after doing our decompression stop to find that the sea wasn’t calm anymore. The wind had picked up and made it difficult to get out with waves crashing on us.
Later that evening i was invited for a late after noon lunch with Ally and Henk for their house warming.
